If your grandmother ever rubbed a paste of kunyit on a bruise, or your family's chicken curry always has that unmistakable golden hue, you've already met turmeric. But can this everyday spice actually do anything for your joints, your liver, or your general wellbeing—or is it just flavour and colour?
Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family, grown commercially in Southeast Asia and India, and its rhizome (underground stem) has been used for culinary and cosmetic purposes. Curcumin, a major component of turmeric, gives the spice its yellow color, and the health activities of turmeric are commonly attributed to curcuminoids, which include curcumin.
In Malaysia and Singapore, you already know turmeric as kunyit—the ingredient that gives nasi kunyit its colour, deepens the base of a curry, and shows up in achar and even some traditional poultices. Historically, turmeric has been used in Chinese, Indian, Islamic, and Thai traditional medicine systems for conditions such as indigestion, the common cold, skin infections, arthritis, abdominal pain, and liver disease, and it has also featured in Indian religious ceremonies.
Today, it's sold as a dietary supplement too—as capsules, extracts, and turmeric-piperine combinations—separate from the spice you'd sprinkle into a pot of rendang.
This is the benefit most people have heard of, and it's also the one with the most research behind it. A 2021 systematic review of 10 studies involving a total of 1,287 participants found that compared with placebo, turmeric may have a beneficial effect, similar to that of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, on knee osteoarthritis pain and function. That's meaningful for anyone who's spent years on their feet at a hawker stall or standing through long MRT commutes with a bad knee.
Human studies have shown potential for curcumin in managing osteoarthritis pain, though researchers are still working out which formulations and forms work best.
Many studies have been conducted on the safety and usefulness of turmeric or curcumin for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), osteoarthritis, and high cholesterol or other lipid disorders. This matters locally, since fatty liver linked to diet and inactivity is an increasingly common finding at polyclinic health screenings.
Initial research suggests that oral turmeric or curcumin might improve some NAFLD measures, but it's unclear which specific measures are consistently improved. Think of it as a promising early lead rather than a proven treatment.
Research has found Curcuma to be associated with anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, antidiarrheal, antimicrobial, antiviral, and antioxidant properties in laboratory studies. In plain terms, curcumin appears to help neutralise the kind of everyday cellular wear-and-tear that builds up over time.
That said, lab findings don't always translate directly into proven human benefits, so treat these as areas of active study rather than settled facts.
Initial research suggests that turmeric or curcumin in an oral or mouthwash formulation might improve symptoms of oral mucositis (tissue swelling and irritation in the mouth) related to cancer treatment. This is a specific, narrower use case rather than a general "cures mouth ulcers" claim, and it's usually studied alongside medical care rather than as a replacement for it.
Here's the catch with turmeric: your body doesn't absorb curcumin very well on its own. Most of what you swallow gets broken down and cleared out before it ever reaches your bloodstream in meaningful amounts.
Oral curcumin products vary in how much curcumin they actually contain, and they often contain substances from other plants, such as piperine from black pepper—combining curcumin with piperine is one way to improve the bioavailability of curcumin. This is why you'll often see turmeric and black pepper supplements sold together, and it's also a scientific echo of something Southeast Asian cooking has always done instinctively—turmeric and black pepper regularly appear in the same spice pastes and curry bases.
Cooking turmeric in oil or ghee, as most traditional recipes do, may also help your body take up more of it than eating raw turmeric powder would, since curcumin is fat-soluble rather than water-soluble.
Conventionally formulated oral turmeric or curcumin, not modified to enhance bioavailability, is likely safe for most people when used for a limited period. Oral turmeric can cause adverse effects such as nausea and vomiting, acid reflux, stomach upset, diarrhea, or constipation in some people, especially at higher intakes than you'd get from cooking.
A more serious concern involves the newer, highly concentrated supplement formulas. Highly bioavailable formulations of curcumin, which enhance the body's ability to absorb the curcumin, may harm your liver, and liver damage has been reported in some people who have consumed these bioavailable formulations. This is a good reason to be cautious with concentrated turmeric supplements, as opposed to turmeric used as a cooking spice, which has a long track record of everyday use.
Turmeric can also make gallbladder problems worse, so it's generally not advised for people with gallstones or a bile duct obstruction. People on blood-thinning medication, those with liver conditions, and anyone scheduled for surgery should check with a doctor first, since turmeric may affect blood clotting and interact with certain medications. Pregnant women should also stick to normal food amounts rather than concentrated supplements.
Turmeric has earned its reputation the old-fashioned way—centuries of use across Asian kitchens and traditional medicine systems, now backed by a growing body of modern research on joints, liver health, and inflammation. It's not a cure-all, and much of the human evidence is still described as preliminary rather than definitive.
The most realistic approach is also the simplest one: keep using turmeric generously in your cooking, pair it with black pepper for better absorption, and treat concentrated supplement versions with more caution and a conversation with your doctor, especially if you have gallbladder issues, liver concerns, or take blood thinners.
