What Is Creatine?

Creatine is often called an amino acid, but technically it isn't one of the 20 amino acids that build proteins — instead, our bodies make it from three other amino acids: arginine, glycine, and methionine. This is promising but still early — not a reason to take creatine specifically for brain health yet.

In its position statement, the International Society of Sports Nutrition states that creatine monohydrate is the most effective nutritional supplement currently available for enhancing capacity for high-intensity exercise and lean body mass during exercise.

Your body mainly stores creatine in muscle, much of it held in a form called phosphocreatine, which is used to make energy quickly during short activity bursts. Because creatine is water-soluble and taken up gradually by muscle tissue, consistency matters more than timing — whether you take it before or after a workout appears to matter far less than simply taking it regularly. People with lower baseline creatine levels, such as vegetarians, may see more benefit from supplementation and larger increases in muscle creatine stores — relevant for the many Singaporeans and Malaysians who eat plant-forward diets around religious or cultural observances.

Safety Basics

When taken by mouth at recommended amounts, creatine is likely safe for many people for up to five years, based on current research. Some people also notice mild water retention or a slightly fuller look in the first week or two, which typically settles once the body adjusts. If you have a heart condition, bipolar disorder, or are on regular medication, it's worth a quick conversation with your GP or pharmacist before starting — the same commonsense check you'd apply to any new supplement.

Natural Food Sources

You don't need a supplement tub to get some creatine into your day — it's naturally present in animal foods that are already familiar on local menus:

  • Beef and pork — think beef noodle soup or a char siew rice plate
  • Chicken — roast chicken rice, a hawker staple
  • Fish and seafood — salmon, tuna, sotong and prawns found in char kway teow or seafood soup
  • Milk and dairy products — a glass of milk or a cup of teh with fresh milk

Because cooking and portion sizes vary so much at hawker centres and kopitiam stalls, it's hard to eat your way to a precise creatine intake — which is part of why supplements became popular among athletes in the first place.
